Overview
Yara International tries to make the world green -- and, in the process, make a little green of its own. The company is among the world's top producers of nitrogen chemicals, used primarily in its mineral fertilizers. It also supplies nitrogen chemicals to industrial markets and nitrates to the explosives industry. It is a global leader in the production of ammonia, nitrates, and specialty fertilizers and commands a quarter of the global ammonia trade. Yara is also known as one of the world's top producers of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), as well as of carbon dioxide. Yara was spun off in 2004 by Norwegian aluminum giant Norsk Hydro, which produced the world's first chemical nitrogen fertilizer.
