Woolworths Group Company Description
Woolworths Group may have begun in the US, but today Woolies is uniquely UK. As a leading -- but deeply troubled -- variety store operator, Woolworths runs some 820 stores, mostly Woolworths Mainchain shops in small towns and suburbs that offer housewares, toys, sweets, apparel, home electronics, and seasonal fare. Woolworths has expanded into entertainment wholesaling and publishing in an effort to reduce its reliance on its ailing stores. Its Entertainment UK (EUK) business is England's #1 distributor of home entertainment, including music, DVDs, games, and books. After failing to find a buyer, the retail arm of Woolworths Group filed for bankruptcy in November 2008, as did Entertainment UK.
