Through subsidiaries, the company serves about 21 million residential, industrial, municipal, and commercial customers in the US and Canada. Its four geographic groups and two functional groups (Recycling and Wheelabrator) provide waste collection, transfer, recycling and resource recovery, and disposal services. Its sites include 265 landfills, 350 transfer stations, 100 material recovery facilities, 110 beneficial-use landfill gas projects, and 15 waste-to-energy plants. In 2008 the company made a bid to acquire Republic Services but was rebuffed.
