Waste Industries USA picks up trash companies nearly as often as it picks up trash cans: The active consolidator has made about 130 acquisitions since 1990. When it's not buying companies, Waste Industries USA is collecting, hauling, and disposing of solid waste for 875,000 municipal, residential, commercial, and industrial customers in the southeastern US. The company has 34 collection operations, 66 drop-off centers, 29 transfer stations, 12 recycling facilities, and nine landfills. In 2008 Chairman Lonnie Pool Jr. led an investor group that took the company private for about $544 million.
