More proof that banking has become the wild Wild West: In October 2008, after first agreeing to sell its banking operations to Citigroup, troubled Wachovia decided to merge with Wells Fargo. Wachovia is one of the biggest banks in the US, with some 3,400 branches in 20 eastern and southern states, as well as Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Texas. Wachovia's financial services businesses include 62%-owned retail brokerage Wachovia Securities (Prudential Financial owns the rest); it has more than 3,700 offices across the US and more than $1.2 trillion in assets under management. Subsidiary Evergreen Investment Management offers mutual funds. Its other segments include capital and wealth management.
