Overview

Valhi keeps it interesting by pursuing a variety of things. The company's NL Industries unit, operating through subsidiary Kronos, is a leading maker of titanium dioxide pigment, which is used to whiten and add opacity to fibers, paper, paint, and plastic. Other subsidiaries include CompX (ergonomic computer support systems and office security products), Tremont (titanium metal products for the aerospace and other markets through its stake in Titanium Metals), and Waste Control Specialists (operator of a hazardous-waste treatment facility in Texas). Chairman Harold Simmons and his family control 95% of Valhi and thus control all of the company's subsidiaries.
