Overview
USPowerGen works to keep the lights on from the Bronx to Staten Island, primarily through subsidiary Astoria Generating Company. Its New York City power-generation facilities have a capacity of more than 2,300 MW. The plants are primarily natural gas fed but more than half can also use other fossil fuel sources, allowing USPowerGen to switch to the most cost-effective raw material. The company sells electricity as well as capacity (utilities are required to carry extra capacity), and ancillary services including automatic generation control, operating reserves, reactive supply, and voltage support.
