Overview
The US Department of the Navy is the Department of Defense's "surf and turf" unit. Established in 1798, its mission is to train and equip combat-ready forces to help deter aggression against the US and its allies. It operates through three main bodies: the Navy Department, which consists mostly of executive offices; the operating forces, including the US Marine Corps, Navy reserve forces, and in times of war the US Coast Guard; and the shore establishment, which consists of repair, communication, and training facilities. The Navy manages a fleet that includes deployable aircraft, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and submarines. It employs about 330,000 active duty personnel, 80% of whom are enlisted.
