Living up to its mandate by the Kentucky General Assembly to be a "preeminent metropolitan research university," the University of Louisville (U of L) is home to the first self-contained artificial heart implant and the first successful hand transplant. A major focus of the university is health care, and the University of Louisville Hospital is a part of the school's medical programs. U of L offers associate, baccalaureate, master's, professional, and doctorate degrees, as well as certificates in some 170 fields of study. It has more than 22,000 students enrolled in 12 colleges and schools on three campuses.
