Recent Developments

Juice may Reduce Medication Potency - Taking some prescription medications with orange or apple juice can reduce their potency, according to Canadian researcher David Bailey, the same researcher who discovered that taking some medications with grapefruit juice can increase their potency. Experts say that fruit processing companies that make juices may need to alert consumers that drinking less of the juices may not be warranted, but that they should follow physician orders when taking prescriptions.

More Americans Choose Store Brands - American consumers are increasingly switching to store brands from name brands as food prices rise and the US economy weakens. Fruit and vegetable processors supplying products that are sold as a store's brand are likely to benefit. The nation's biggest grocers, including Wal-Mart, Kroger, Supervalu, and Safeway, report that sales of their own brands are rising, according to the Lexington Herald Leader.

Disease Attacks Florida Citrus Trees - A bacterial disease that kills citrus trees has been found in Florida. Citrus greening disease, also known as huanglongbing or yellow dragon disease, is spread by insects. Trees infected with the disease produce bitter, inedible fruit and eventually die. Spending on a research program to control the disease will triple to $20 million in 2009, according to the Florida Citrus Production Research Advisory Council.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by food consumption, which depends on population growth. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations because products are commodities subject to intense price competition. Companies compete largely based on cost and their ability to distribute the finished product. Large companies have advantages in distribution operations. Small companies can compete effectively in local or regional markets.
