Venerable Union Pacific (UP) keeps on chugging down the track, just as it has since the 19th century. The company's Union Pacific Railroad is the leading rail freight carrier in the US (just ahead of Burlington Northern Santa Fe). Union Pacific Railroad transports coal, chemicals, industrial products, and other freight over a system of more than 32,200 route miles in 23 states in the western two-thirds of the US. The company owns more than 26,300 route miles of its rail network; leases and trackage rights, which allow UP to use other railroads' tracks, account for the rest.
