Overview
Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) makes the legos of the chemicals world. The company, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical, turns out building-block chemicals such as ethylene and propylene, which are converted into the most widely used plastics resins: polyethylene and polypropylene. It is also a leading producer of ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol used to make polyester fibers and antifreeze, respectively. Although the name Union Carbide may conjure up nightmarish images of the Bhopal disaster in India (1984) or the company's more recent landslide of asbestos litigation, the Houston-based company originally made its name as a major global chemical producer and continues today as a major basic chem maker.
