TransMedics Company Description
When TransMedics talks about putting their heart in your hands, they really mean it. The company is developing a system to circulate warm blood through hearts and other transplant organs while they are being transported, as opposed to the cold transport system currently in use. The device makes it possible to actually deliver a beating heart to the surgeon. TransMedics' Organ Care System (OCS) is already in use in the European Union for heart transplants and in FDA trials in the US. The company hopes to clear the federal hurdles by early 2009; a system for lungs, livers, and kidneys is also in the works. TransMedics was formed in 1998.
