Recent Developments

Distributor Group Supports Chemical Security Anti-Terrorism Standards - The National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) supports US Homeland Security Committee legislation to make permanent the Department of Homeland Security's authority to implement the Chemical Security Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS). NACD has expressed concerns, however, about a section of CFATS that allows states and localities to adopt and enforce standards more stringent than the federal law unless these measures directly conflict with federal law. NACD says that federal preemption is a key element of any effective chemical security program.

Bisphenol A Controversy Continues - Senate Democrats want more research on the possible hazards of bisphenol A. Some earlier research showed that the estrogen-like compound found in many plastic products may harm the development of children's brains and interfere with human reproduction. Legislation requiring more research on bisphenol A may be more likely to pass if Democrats increase their majorities in Congress after the 2008 elections.

US Chemical Exports, Imports Increased in 2007 - US chemical exports rose 13.8 percent in 2007 compared to 2006; imports rose 9.2 percent. Exports to 14 of the top 15 destinations for US-made chemicals also increased. Many experts say that the weak value of the US dollar will lead to further growth in US chemical exports.

Competitive Landscape

Chemical distribution is a cyclical business dependent on industrial demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on an efficient distribution system. Larger companies can offer more products and services. Local and regional distributors can compete effectively through superior service. The industry is highly automated: annual industry revenue per employee is about $800,000.
