The Toronto Raptors professional basketball team joined the National Basketball Association as an expansion team in 1995, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies (now the Memphis Grizzlies). Originally awarded to a group led by John Bitove, the franchise has struggled through several losing seasons and has made just a handful of playoff appearances. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the Toronto Maple Leafs professional hockey franchise, has owned the Raptors since 1998.
