Therakos, Inc.
Overview
Therakos makes the treatment of disease an out-of-body experience. The Johnson & Johnson subsidiary has developed the UVAR XTS and CELLEX photopheresis systems, in which a patient's white blood cells are collected, exposed to ultraviolet light in combination with UVADEX (a light-activated drug), and then returned to the patient. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis and is approved in the US, Canada, and Europe to treat skin lesions associated with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, a kind of cancer of the immune system. Therakos' photopheresis system is the only such treatment to gain approval from the FDA.
