Overview

The company owns a portfolio of residential, commercial, retail, and industrial properties throughout the US and in Canada and Puerto Rico. It owns more than 19,000 residential units and about 700 hotel properties and a total of approximately 25 million sq. ft. of commercial space. The company has grown through major acquisitions, including the 2007 purchase of Extended Stay America, the 2003 purchase of Prime Retail and its Prime Outlets mall portfolio, and the 2005 purchase of Chicago property developer Prime Group Realty Trust. Chairman David Lichtenstein (German for "lightstone") founded the company in 1988.
