The world's fourth-largest grocery retailer, Tesco runs about 5,380 stores in the UK (where it's the #1 retailer), and more than a dozen other countries in Europe, Asia, and the US (under the Fresh & Easy banner). Built on the "pile it high, sell it cheap" creed of founder Sir Jack Cohen, Tesco abandoned its discount format, with its down-market image, for a variety of dressier midmarket formats.
