ENR Designates Top 100 Green Designers - The Engineering News-Record (ENR) has designated the Top 100 Green Designers, based on project value and certification by third-party environmental standards or ratings organizations. The top five companies in ENR's rankings are Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum; URS Corp; Gensler; HKS; and Fluor Corp. The 100 design firms' green projects in 2007 collectively generated $1.6 billion in US revenue and $121 million abroad, according to ENR. Certification groups include the US Green Building Council and the Green Building Initiative.

Price Growth Varies by Service Specialty - Architecture firms are charging higher prices, but specialties vary in rate growth. US architectural services firms received prices that were 1.9 percent higher in May 2008 than a year earlier. Among subcategories, prices for advisory and pre-design architectural services rose 2.9 percent; for residential architectural services, 2.8 percent; and for commercial and industrial services, 2.5 percent. Prices for public and institutional facility architecture grew 1.6 percent.

Industry Revenue Declines First Quarter 2008 - Quarterly industry revenue has decreased recently, despite price increases. Revenue at US architectural and related services firms declined 2.7 percent in first quarter 2008 from the previous quarter. Almost 73 percent of revenue came from businesses, 11 percent from household consumers and individual users, and the remaining 16 percent from government and other customer segments.

Competitive Landscape

Demand for architects' services depends heavily on the volume of residential and commercial construction. Because most costs are fixed, profitability depends on a constant inflow of work. Architectural firms are often small because there are few economies of scale in the industry: architectural design can be done as well, and for the same cost, by a small or large company.
