Telkom SA Company Description
Telkom SA is the incumbent telecom carrier in South Africa. The former government monopoly maintains 4.5 million access lines providing local access, long-distance, and data network services. It also operates South Africa's leading wireless carrier, Vodacom, a 50%-owned subsidiary with 23 million customers in South Africa and about 7 million elsewhere. (UK-based Vodafone Group owns the other half.) Telkom also provides directory services, wireless data services, and Internet services serving clients beyond South Africa's borders through subsidiaries Africa Online, Swiftnet, and TDS Directory Operations. The government of South Africa owns about 40% of Telkom.
