Spain's onetime phone monopoly, Telefónica, is still the telecommunications jefé among Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking populations worldwide. Through Telefónica de España, the company is the leading fixed-line operator in Spain with more than 16 million lines in service. It has more than 41 million total fixed lines in service including operations in Latin America through subsidiary Telefónica Latinoamérica and in the Czech Republic through Telefónica O2 Czech Republic (formerly the Cesky Group). Telefónica Móviles, its 93%-owned wireless unit (it is buying the rest), has 20 million subscribers in Spain among 135 million overall.
