Overview
O2 owns mobile phone operators that serve about 24 million customers. The company's O2 (UK) subsidiary is a leading mobile phone operator in the UK, with more than 17 million customers, and O2 also has customers in Germany (11 million) and Ireland (1.6 million). O2 has additionally introduced 3G service. The group has been positioning itself as one of the leading providers of mobile data services in Europe, partly through its O2 Online portal services, which has been transferred to O2 (UK). Once known as BT Cellnet, the wireless unit of British Telecom (now BT Group), the company is now a subsidiary of Spain's Telefónica.
