Telecom Argentina Company Description

Telecom Argentina is the fixed-line operator of local and long-distance services in northern and southern Argentina. It also provides cellular and PCS phone services in Argentina, as well as in Paraguay through a 68% stake in Núcleo. France Telecom formerly controlled the company through its Nortel Inversora venture with Telecom Italia. France Telecom sold most of its stake in 2003 to the Werthein Group, an Argentine agricultural concern owned in part by vice chairman Gerardo Werthein. Nortel continues to be Telecom Argentina's largest shareholder with a 55% stake. Nortel is owned by Sofora, a consortium owned by Telecom Italia (50%), the Werthein Group (48%), and France Telecom (2%).
