Industry Overview

The talent and modeling agency industry includes more than 30,000 companies with combined annual revenue of about $5 billion. Major companies include Creative Artists Agency (CAA); William Morris; International Creative Management (ICM); and IMG. The industry is fragmented: the top 50 companies account for less than 45 percent of industry revenue. The industry is characterized by many sole proprietorships with no paid employees.

The industry includes agents and personal managers who represent or manage actors and entertainers, models, sports figures, and other public figures. Agents focus on finding clients work; personal managers generally find sponsorships and endorsements for clients.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by the performing arts, sports entertainment, and advertising industries. The profitability of individual agencies depends on the success of agents' talent in winning auditions, leading to a steady stream of contracts. Large agencies have advantages in relationships with major studios, fashion designers, and cosmetic companies. Small agencies can compete successfully by specializing in a particular medium or location and developing niche customer relationships. Talent and modeling agencies are labor-intensive: while average annual revenue per worker for agencies with employees exceeds $200,000, single agent businesses average less than $40,000 in annual revenue.

Products, Operations & Technology

Major services are finding auditions for clients and negotiating contracts. Additional services include finding photographers, arranging acting teachers, satisfying other support needs, and securing endorsement deals.

Agents promote their talent and models to buyers based on required gender, age, race, looks, and talent the buyer needs for a project. Agents submit the talent's head shot, composite card, or portfolio to arrange for an audition or, in the case of modeling agencies, "look-sees." Successful auditions lead to bookings. Modeling agencies also have open calls where they advertise for potential talent to interview on a particular day; hundreds of candidates may attend open calls.

Modeling agencies generally sign models to exclusive contracts that vary in length depending on the model's status and experience. Modeling agencies stage fashion weeks in major cities, where multiple fashion designers showcase their work and participate in cosmetic campaigns. Talent agents generally have exclusive contracts with talent in certain territories.

Agents operate across the country, representing local talent, as well as better known Hollywood stars and New York fashion models. Local agents provide talent for events such as birthday parties, trade shows, and civic events.

Some agencies use the Internet to promote their clients. Modeling agencies have begun emailing portfolios to potential buyers, which speeds the booking process and reduces costs.
