Overview
Synovus has a nose for community banking. The holding company owns about 40 banks offering deposit accounts and consumer and business loans in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Through around 450 locations, the banks and other Synovus subsidiaries provide deposits, loans, credit cards, insurance, and asset management services. The company is highly acquisitive and has been expanding in the fast-growing markets in the South. It maintains separate charters and local boards of directors for its subsidiary banks, losing some operational efficiency, but gaining from the institutions' community presence. In 2007 Synovus spun off credit card processor Total System Services (TSYS).
