SUPERVALU Company Description
SUPERVALU is feeling pretty super following the acquisition of more than 1,100 supermarkets from fallen grocery giant Albertsons. Its 2006 purchase of the Albertsons' stores catapulted the chain to second place in the traditional grocery retail market (behind Kroger) with about 2,380 stores in some 40 US states. The deal added half a dozen new banners, including Albertsons, Acme Markets, and Shaw's, to SUPERVALU's store roster (which includes Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Cub Foods, Shop 'n Save). SUPERVALU also bought Albertsons' in-store pharmacy operations. The company is also one of the nation's largest food wholesalers, supplying some 1,920 grocery stores nationwide with brand-name and private-label goods.
