Supermercados Unimarc Company Description

Stuck between a rock (the Andes) and a hard place (its competitors), Chilean grocer Supermercados Unimarc is struggling to improve its fourth-place position in the Chilean market. Unimarc operates about 40 supermarkets (primarily in Santiago) under several formats targeting middle- to high-income consumers. Its smallest stores offer about 8,000 items; its traditional stores offer some 13,000 products, with an emphasis on fresh foods and prepared meals; and its largest supermarkets offer 15,000 items. Controlled by local businessman Francisco Javier Errazuriz, Unimarc is up for sale with both Cencosud SA, owner of the rival Santa Isabel supermarket chain, and the local Saieh family bidding for its assets.
