Overview
SunOpta seeks to shine in several industries. The company's SunOpta Food Group sources, processes, and packages natural and organic food products, as well as fresh berries. It accounts for more than 90% of sales and has grown through some 30 acquisitions since 1999. The firm also owns 66% of Opta Minerals, which recycles industrial waste, makes abrasives and bentonite clays for foundries, and makes those little granules that are on roof shingles. Amid falling sales, SunOpta is shedding non-core assets, including its Canadian food distribution assets to rival United Natural Foods and its fiber preparation and pre-treatment business SunOpta BioProcess to Mascoma Corp. in 2010.
