Overview

Stratasys doesn't make the LEGO pieces strewn across your kid's bedroom, but it does make rapid prototyping systems that designers and engineers -- including the makers of LEGO toys -- use to get products to market faster. The company's software takes a conceptual model generated from a CAD workstation and creates a series of cross-sections to form a 3-D blueprint. Stratasys' fused deposition modeling (FDM) machines use the blueprint to create physical models by building up layers of wax and plastic polymers. Ford, BMW, Oreck, and others use the company's products to build prototypes for cars, electronics, tools, and other products. Stratasys gets nearly half of its revenues outside of North America.
