Sonic Automotive Company Description
No stranger to speed, Bruton Smith has raced Sonic Automotive to the front of the pack of US auto dealers behind larger rivals, such as AutoNation and Penske Automotive. Founded with five dealerships in 1997, Sonic owns about 170 new- and used-car dealerships and some 35 collision repair centers in about 15 states. Sonic sells more than 30 brands of cars and light trucks and offers vehicle financing. The company plans to continue growing in metropolitan markets. Sonic owns Massey Cadillac, a leading Cadillac dealer in the US. CEO Smith controls more than 50% of Sonic's voting power. He is also CEO and majority owner of Speedway Motorsports, which runs about a half a dozen NASCAR racetracks.
