Sobeys' stores would be cool even if its freezers were on the fritz. One of Canada's leading grocery chains (trailing Loblaw Companies), Sobeys operates about 1,325 grocery stores, some 700 of them franchised, and 25 distribution centers in all 10 provinces. The Canadian grocery chain operates about 280 outlets under the Sobeys banner. Some of its stores (which also include Foodland, IGA, IGA extra, Price Chopper, and the Lawtons Drug Stores chain) offer bakeries, pharmacies, dry cleaning, and banking services. It also operates convenience stores under the Needs, Sobeys Express, and other banners in Atlantic Canada and Québec. Sobeys is 100%-owned by Empire Company, itself controlled by the Sobey family.
