Snow Brand Milk Products was once Japan's largest dairy firm, but things went sour in 2000 when contaminated Snow Brand milk caused Japan's worst food poisoning outbreak. Two years later the company was again seared by scandal over fraudulent meat-labeling schemes. Begun as a farmers' cooperative in 1925, the company also makes fruit juices, edible oils, and baby food. Snow Brand liquidated its meat business and spun off its ice cream and commercial milk operations. As the company restructured and tried to rebuild customer trust, it emphasized its profitable butter and cheese units.
