Smithfield Foods Company Description
When Smithfield Foods waddles up to the trough, all the other porkers stand back. Fat from acquisitions, the company is the world's largest hog producer and pork processor. Its products include fresh pork and processed meats sold under the John Morrell, Lykes, Patrick Cudahy, and Smithfield Premium names. It distributes across the US and to about 40 other countries, and it has made major moves into France and Poland. In a steady effort to diversify, the company has built up its beef and prepared-foods operations through acquisitions. In 2007 Smithfield acquired pork producer Premium Standard Farms.
