Overview
Close to the shifting sands of the northern Florida coast, Shands Jacksonville Medical Center offers a range of services to the 19 counties it serves in Florida and southern Georgia. The 700-bed hospital includes a cardiovascular center, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, and the state's first Level I trauma center. It also operates primary and specialty clinics in the Jacksonville area. Founded in 1870 as the Duval Hospital and Asylum, Shands Jacksonville started the first cancer program in Florida in 1948. The medical center is an academic facility affiliated with the University of Florida Health Science Center. Shands Jacksonville is one of the largest of seven hospitals in the Shands HealthCare family.
