The company - formerly a diversified conglomerate of subsidiaries in engineering, construction, logistics, and related fields - has narrowed its focus to concentrate on its utilities and marine engineering operations. Subsidiaries include SembCorp Utilities (also known as SembUtilities) and 62%-held SembCorp Marine. SembCorp Industries, which serves clients primarily in the Asia/Pacific region and in Europe, was formed from the 1998 merger of Singapore Technologies Industrial and Sembawang. Singapore's government controls 49% of SembCorp through investment company Temasek Holdings.
