Recent Developments

Industry-Funded Studies have Higher Quality Reporting - The quality of reporting of long-term weight loss trials is higher for industry-funded than for non-industry-funded research, according to The International Journal of Obesity. Weight reduction services may benefit from using industry-funded research to develop weight reduction programs. Industry-funded research reporting may be of higher quality due to better funding and more training for industry researchers.

Petitioners Seek More Regulation of Weight Loss Supplements - Pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline, the American Dietetic Association, The Obesity Society, and weight management association Shaping America's Health have petitioned the FDA to determine that dietary supplements claiming to promote weight loss should be regulated as disease claims. Claims related to disease-prevention or treatment must meet drug standards and require premarket approval. Industry experts say that regulating dietary supplements as disease claims would force all "diet pill" manufacturers to support claims with scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.

Weight Watchers Opens Pilot Center in China - Weight Watchers has partnered with Groupe Danone, a leading producer of cultured dairy products, to launch a weight management services pilot center in Shanghai, China. The joint venture, known as Weight Watchers Danone Weight Loss Consultation, will tailor Weight Watchers' weight management solution to the Chinese lifestyle and eating habits, according to Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers and Groupe Danone plan to open additional centers throughout China.

Competitive Landscape

Consumers' excess weight, personal income, and leisure time drive demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on effective marketing, customer acquisition and retention, and efficient operations. Large companies have advantages of scale in marketing, infrastructure, and partnerships. Small companies can compete effectively by offering individualized services or upscale facilities. The industry is labor-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is under $50,000.
