Overview
At Safilo, the eyes always have it. The firm makes and distributes eyeglass frames, sport goggles, and sunglasses. It sells its products through sporting goods stores and opticians under its own Smith, Carrera, Oxydo, Blue Bay, and Safilo brands and such licensed names as Emporio Armani and Giorgio Armani, Dior, Diesel, Gucci, Fossil, kate spade, Nine West, Valentino, and Liz Claiborne. It runs the Solstice retail chain, which numbers more than 50 outlets, in the US. Through subsidiaries and distributors worldwide, Safilo sells its products in some 130 countries. The manufacturer was established by the Tabacchi family in 1934 after it bought Italy's first lens and frame production plant, itself founded in 1878.
