Overview
SABIC is an acronym for the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, but it could stand for "seriously big industrial chemicals company." Saudi Arabia's largest non-oil company, SABIC produces chemicals through six units: chemicals, performance chemicals, polymers (polyolefins, PVC, and polyester), SABIC Innovative Plastics, fertilizers, and metals (mostly steel, along with stakes in aluminum companies). One of the world's largest makers of polyethylene and polypropylene (with LyondellBasell and Ineos), it is majority owned (70%) by the Saudi government. In 2007 SABIC bought the former GE Plastics (now the Innovative Plastics unit) for $11 billion, greatly expanding its US operations and adding its seventh unit.
