Overview
The tale of one of the world's smallest car makers is a Saab story. With a yearly production of some 126,000 cars, Saab's models include the 9-3 (convertible or sport sedan), the luxury 9-5 sedan (and sport wagon), and the seven-passenger 9-7X SUV. Offered only through Saab Expressions dealerships, Saab cars woo enthusiasts with merchandising that includes pen and pencil sets, martini glasses, and watches. Preparing to separate from GM, Saab filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. A year later GM sold Saab to Dutch sports carmaker Swedish Automobile (formerly Spyker) for about $400 million. The tiny supercar maker has struggled to turn Saab around. Saab has had to cease production more than once during 2011.
