Royal Ahold Company Description

A tattered prince of global food retailing, Royal Ahold owns or has interests in about 2,900 supermarkets and specialty stores in Europe and the US. Its status as one of the world's largest grocery retailers has been diminished, but it still ranks as a leading supermarket operator along the east coast of the US under names such as Giant Food and Stop & Shop, which account for more than 50% of total sales. Royal Ahold also operates the #1 food retailer in the Netherlands, Albert Heijn. Other interests include e-retailer Peapod and a majority stake in Scandinavian food seller ICA AB. In 2007 it sold food distributor U.S. Foodservice to a pair of US private equity firms, and grocer TOPS Markets to Morgan Stanley.
