Recent Developments

Industry Group Revises Marketing Code - The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has revised its conduct code for interacting with healthcare professionals. Drug company sales representatives will have to stop giving out coffee mugs and pens that promote their products when they visit doctor offices, and are prohibited from providing restaurant meals and entertainment or recreation. The revision is a response to widespread concerns that pharmaceutical marketing strategies unduly influence how doctors prescribe drugs for patients.

New Jersey Mandates Health Insurance for Children - The New Jersey legislature approved a bill that would require all children in the state to have health insurance. Pharmaceutical manufacturers usually benefit when more people have access to medical care. The bill also expands FamilyCare, the state health insurance program, to include more poor parents.

Veto of Medicare Bill Overridden - Congress voted to override President Bush's veto of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008. The legislation mandates weekly updating of Medicare prescription drug pricing and prompt payment of prescription drug payments under Medicare Part D. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are likely to benefit from the changes, which experts say may improve patient access to pharmacy services.

Competitive Landscape

The industry is marked by rapid advances in scientific knowledge that produce ever-more effective medicines. Profitability is determined mainly by the ability to discover new drugs. The industry is dominated by the large manufacturers/marketers that manufacture drugs, have large research operations, and also have large clinical testing, marketing, and distribution capabilities. Small companies are mainly research operations or manufacturers of non-prescription products. Because of the high value of the product, average revenue per employee is a very high $600,000.
