Recent Developments
3D Technology Coming to Independent Theaters - A group purchasing association for independent movie theaters has announced an agreement that will make next-generation 3D capability more affordable for independent theaters. Cinema Buying Group's (CBG) agreement with 3D technology leasing company RealD will make 3D technology available to independent theater operators, which own over 8,000 screens in the US and Canada. The agreement could help independent movie theaters compete more effectively with theater chains, many of which have already deployed 3D technology.
Summer Box Office Revenues Unchanged - US movie theater revenue was flat during the 2008 summer movie season compared to the same period in 2007, according to Time. Revenue totaled about $4 billion, with higher ticket prices balancing a slight drop in attendance. The summer movie season runs from the first weekend in May to Labor Day.
Canada Proposes Penalties for Movie Piracy in Theaters - Legislation introduced in the Canadian Parliament would outlaw the use of handheld cameras to copy movies at theaters. Filming a movie with a camcorder in theatres would carry a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment, while recording for the purpose of commercial distribution would be punishable by up to five years imprisonment. Warner Brothers film studio had said that it would cancel early promotional screenings in Canada due to movie copying in theaters, but reversed its position after the legislation was introduced.
Competitive Landscape
Personal income and leisure time drive demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on securing access to popular movies and sales of high-margin food and beverages. Large companies have advantages in negotiating with movie distributors; marketing; and economies of scale in purchasing. Small companies can compete effectively by specializing in movie type or audience, or providing better service and amenities. Average annual revenue per worker is $80,000.
