Overview
Redbox wants to muscle its way into movie and game renters' hearts. In an industry dominated by Netflix and GameFly, Redbox rents DVDs through red kiosks at select McDonald's fast-food outlets, supermarkets, and discount stores. Customers rent movies or video games at the automated kiosk for $1 per night (with no late fees) or they can reserve them online and pick them up at the kiosk. Discs can be returned to any Redbox machine and no membership is required. The fast-growing firm, which boasts about 33,000 kiosks nationwide (with each holding some 700 discs and 200 titles), plans to offer Internet streaming by the end of 2011. Founded in 2003, Redbox is owned by Coinstar.
