Quiñenco (which means "black lagoon" in a local Indian dialect) is a family business -- a massive, diversified company holding the investments of the Luksic family, which controls nearly 85% of the company. Quiñenco owns more than half of Madeco, which makes copper, aluminum, and consumer packaging. Its 60%-controlled Compañía Cervecerías Unidas (CCU) makes beer, wine, and soft drinks. Other holdings include local phone service provider Telefónica de Sur (Telsur) and Banco de Chile. A separate Luksic family holding company, Antofagasta, has mining and railroad interests.
