Recent Developments
Aviation Industry Holds Fuel Price Summit - Representatives from the aviation industry met in Washington, DC, to discuss strategies for coping with climbing fuel prices that are chipping away at profitability. Key trade associations participating included the National Business Aviation Association, American Association of Airport Executives, the Air Transport Association, and the National Air Carrier Association. The summit also included airline executives, FAA and DOT officials, members of Congress, and financial analysts. Jet fuel prices in the first week of June 2008 were more than 90 percent higher than in June 2007.
Aviation Manufacturing Reports Mixed Results - The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reports mixed results for first quarter shipments and billings. Billings in first quarter were up more than 16 percent compared to first quarter 2007, but shipments decreased more than 7 percent. Market share growth is shifting away from North America for most manufacturers. According to GAMA's CEO, uncertainty in the US economy is having the most impact on certain products within the piston portion of the market.
Air Charter Providers have Annual Meeting - In June 2008, air charter providers met for the National Air Transit Association (NATA) Air Charter Summit. The gathering provided operators a forum for discussing current and future market trends and opportunities, reviewing FAA and DOT regulatory issues, and sharing best practices and industry intelligence with industry leaders and peers.
Competitive Landscape
Demand is driven by corporate profits and the needs of the US military. The profitability of individual companies depends on effective marketing and customer service. Large companies have advantages in fleet size and name recognition. Smaller companies can compete effectively by serving small local markets and offering lower prices. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is nearly $250,000.
