Greece is the word and Piraeus has most certainly heard. Piraeus Bank provides retail banking, investment banking, leasing and shipping, and insurance services in the Mediterranean and in Central and Eastern Europe. It has a network of more than 300 branches across Greece and about 400 more in Albania (Tirana Bank), Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, the Ukraine, and the US (Marathon Bank). Piraeus Bank also provides its services through its electronic Winbank business, which includes ATMs, Internet, and phone banking. With a diversified loan portfolio, the company has no exposure to subprime loans or related products. Piraeus Bank was founded in 1916 and was under state control from 1971 through 1991.
