Philips Electronics Competition
Now Viewing Philips Electronics's competition in: Audio and Video Equipment Manufacturing
Recent Developments
Car Audio Going the Way of MP3 - First cassettes, then CD players, and now MP3 connections are driving the future of car audio units and systems. Industry representatives note that sales of car audio units with MP3 connections, either directly or with a special tuner feature, are taking off. Though experts don't anticipate that CD players will go away completely, they do feel that MP3 connections are slowly taking over, led in part by the popularity of Apple's iPod.
Luxury Audio Manufacturers Receive Boost - According to a recent story in The New York Times, luxury spenders are still spending amid US economic woes. The Luxury Institute's Luxury Brand Status Index supports this in its recent ranking of high-end audio equipment. Bang & Olufsen were ranked first; close behind were Bose and Bowers & Wilkins.
Blu-ray Taking Off in US - Blu-ray disc players, which play high-definition DVDs, are growing in popularity in the US, with estimated penetration of 9 percent of US households, according to research firm Interpret. Of those surveyed, 60 percent are aware of the technology, in contrast to virtually no awareness in 2006. However, mass adoption of Blu-ray is somewhat limited because consumers must have HDTVs to use the technology, though experts indicate that the number of HDTVs in US households is growing exponentially.
Competitive Landscape
Demand is driven by consumer income and the rate of product innovation. The profitability of individual companies depends on manufacturing efficiency and effective marketing and distribution. Large companies have advantages in economies of scale in manufacturing, marketing, and distribution. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products or components in system solutions, such as speakers in a home theatre system. Average annual revenue per worker is about $500,000 per year.
