Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is the leading Filipino telecommunications provider with approximately 32 million fixed-line and wireless subscribers. PLDT offers cellular service through its Smart Communications and Piltel units. Nearly all subscribers use the company's prepaid GSM (global system for mobile communication) services. PLDT maintains about 1.7 million fixed lines (mostly around Manila) and provides local, long-distance, data, and network services over its fiber-optic network and leased satellite and submarine cable. First Pacific owns about a quarter of PLDT.
