PETCO Animal Supplies is a holding company for PETCO Animal Supplies Stores, which is the second-largest US retailer of specialty pet supplies. The company boasts more than 950 stores in all 50 states, making it the only pet store to cover the entire US market. The company is barking up the tree of rival PetSmart, which leads the market. PETCO Animal Supplies holding company was formed in early 2005 to create a foundation for the firm's upcoming growth strategies. The holding company also changed the name of its operating subsidiary. In 2006 two buyout firms -- Texas Pacific Group and Leonard Green & Partners -- took PETCO private in a deal worth $1.8 billion.
