In late 2008 the once #3 industry player acquired #2 company Allied Waste for $6 billion to place it closer to industry leader Waste Management in terms of revenues and geographic coverage. Republic provides waste disposal services for commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential customers through its network of 375 collection companies. Republic owns or operates more than 190 solid waste landfills, 220 transfer stations, and about 80 recycling centers. The company serves millions of customers through its waste collection contracts with more than 3,000 municipalities.
